Working with an organisation called Wholesome Wave, NYC launched a new program called the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program.
Vouchers exchangeable for fresh produce at farmer’s markets are prescribed to patients. This is combined with long term nutritional counseling.
The program has been piloted elsewhere and results are encouraging.
This is a move from a ‘treatment’ to a ‘prevention’ type of healthcare, which targets healthy behaviors and food habits. Allowing for more sustainable results over time.
This is also particularly intriguing because of the partnership with farmer’s markets which provides access to healthy foods that are out of reach of certain populations.
